The North Belgaum Industries Association (NBIA), representing industries in the Honga, Kakti and Kangrali areas, has raised concerns over the deteriorating infrastructure and unresolved ownership issues affecting local industrial units.
A major concern highlighted during the meeting was that more than 50% of entrepreneurs operating industries in the area for over 30 years still do not possess ownership documents.
The association has been regularly taking up the problems faced by industries with the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), District Industries Centre and other concerned government officials. It said efforts are being made to draw the government’s attention to the infrastructure and other essential requirements of the industrial areas.
The roads in the Honga industrial estate are among the major concerns. They were last asphalted around 15 years ago and are now riddled with large potholes, making movement difficult.
Entrepreneurs also pointed out that roads are frequently dug up by government agencies and other entities for laying cables, pipelines and gas lines. However, the roads are often not properly restored after the work is completed, further worsening their condition.
The industrial area also faces a lack of drinking water supply, while inadequate street lighting has resulted in poor illumination at several locations.
Participants expressed dissatisfaction that while the government is actively inviting new investments and industries to Karnataka, inadequate attention is being given to the problems faced by existing entrepreneurs who have been operating in the region for several years.
The industries in the area employ more than 5,000 workers and also generate direct and indirect employment for a large number of local residents.
During the meeting, the association demanded that the infrastructure-related issues be addressed on priority. It was decided to actively pursue the matters with the government until a resolution is reached.
The NBIA also plans to meet the concerned minister soon to present the issues and seek solutions.
