In a significant move, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has denied the renewal of undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats for a private medical college in Belagavi for the academic year 2025-26, following allegations of bribery. According to a report by The Times of India (TOI), a senior doctor serving as an assessor with the NMC was arrested by the CBI after allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh in exchange for a favorable inspection report for the college.

In its official statement, the NMC announced that, “as an exemplary action,” it would not renew the existing seats for both UG and PG programs. Furthermore, all applications from the college seeking new courses or an increase in seat capacity for 2025-26 have been cancelled. The implicated assessor has been blacklisted pending the outcome of the investigation.

The college in question, which falls under a deemed-to-be university, currently holds 200 undergraduate seats and does not contribute any of them to the state government’s quota. When contacted, the college principal claimed that no official communication had been received from the NMC regarding the matter.
