Veteran educationist, cooperative leader and institution builder Dr Prabhakar Basavaprabhu Kore will be conferred the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, by the President of India at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, June 23.
The award recognises Dr Kore’s extraordinary contribution to education, healthcare, literature and institution-building, spanning more than four decades. He was among the Padma Shri awardees announced by the Government of India in January 2026 under the Literature and Education category.
From Ankali to National Recognition
Born on August 1, 1947, in the village of Ankali in Chikodi taluk, Belagavi district, Dr Kore’s journey reflects the transformation of a rural son into one of India’s most influential education leaders.
Coming from an agrarian family, he went on to become a prominent cooperative leader, parliamentarian and educationist. However, it is his work through the Karnataka Lingayat Education Society that has left the most enduring impact.
When Dr Kore assumed leadership of KLE Society in 1985, the organisation managed barely a few dozen institutions. Over the next forty years, he spearheaded an unprecedented expansion that transformed KLE into one of India’s largest educational networks.
Today, KLE operates 316 educational institutions, hospitals and research centres across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Delhi, Dubai and Malaysia, serving nearly 1.45 lakh students and providing employment to more than 18,000 people.

Building a Global Educational Ecosystem
Under Dr Kore’s stewardship, KLE expanded far beyond traditional schooling.
The network today includes:
- Schools and PU colleges
- Degree colleges
- Medical colleges
- Dental colleges
- Nursing institutions
- Pharmacy colleges
- Engineering and technology institutions
- Management schools
- Research centres
Among his most significant achievements was the establishment of KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research in Belagavi in 2006 and KLE Technological University in 2015, both of which have emerged as major centres for higher education and research.
Transforming Healthcare
Dr Kore’s legacy extends equally into healthcare.
What began as educational expansion evolved into one of the region’s largest healthcare ecosystems. KLE’s hospitals today provide tertiary and super-speciality care across multiple disciplines.
He played a pivotal role in developing a large healthcare network that now includes thousands of hospital beds and extensive charitable treatment facilities. KLE’s healthcare institutions have become referral centres for patients from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa and neighbouring states.
The group’s hospitals collectively provide treatment through thousands of beds supported by a large team of doctors, specialists and healthcare professionals, making Belagavi a major medical destination in the region.
Education with Values
Those associated with Dr Kore often describe him as a visionary who believed education should not merely create employment but also build character and contribute to nation-building.
His emphasis on ethics, culture, humanism and social responsibility became a defining feature of KLE’s educational philosophy.
Through value-based education, he consistently advocated that institutions must create responsible citizens alongside professionals, a vision that earned appreciation across political and academic circles.
Public Life and Leadership
Beyond education, Dr Kore also played an active role in public life.
He served:
- Three terms as a Rajya Sabha member
- One term as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC)
His influence extended into cooperative movements, rural development initiatives and social welfare activities across Karnataka.
In 2022, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indo-American Press Club in recognition of his contributions to education and society.
A Proud Moment for Belagavi
For generations of students, doctors, teachers and professionals whose lives have been shaped by KLE institutions, the Padma Shri is being viewed as recognition not only of an individual but also of a transformative educational movement that originated in Belagavi.
From a small village in Chikodi taluk to receiving one of India’s highest civilian honours at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Dr Prabhakar Kore’s journey stands as one of the most remarkable stories of institution-building to emerge from North Karnataka.
Few know that Dr Prabhakar Kore is also a survivor of a near-fatal shooting. On October 19, 2006, he was shot three times by his nephew during a dispute at Ankali village in Chikodi taluk. While doctors at KLE Hospital successfully removed two bullets, a third bullet lodged in his liver could not be extracted as the procedure posed a serious risk to his life. Nearly two decades later, the bullet reportedly remains in his body โ a silent reminder of one of the most dramatic chapters in the life of the man who went on to lead KLE Society and now receives the Padma Shri.
As the nation honours him today, Belagavi celebrates a son of the soil whose vision has touched lakhs of lives across India and beyond.
