Nothing special under the new special 100 crore grant

Belgaum was expecting something elaborate to happen by the use of the second special 100 crore grant the city has got. In a meeting held to decide the various works to be undertaken nothing new was proposed.

It was old wine in a new bottle. The new 100 crores will be spent on normal works and nothing great is expected. DC, MP, 3 MLAs and other officials were present at the meet which was chaired by the District incharge minister.

34.20 crores for roads Gutters Street lights
3 crores 82 lakhs for Parking and signal system
15.20  crores Water supply
5 crores for moving the Garbage dump yard from Turmuri
10.20 crores Cleanliness
7.60 crores Garden development
Under the first 100 crore up till now of the 357 works under taken only 273 have been completed, 36 are in completion mode and tenders have been invited for other 48.

For the second grant work wont begin until May and then rains so again delay and work wont complete.

District incharge minister was skeptical of a sub way construction as he said it would give rise to illegal activities. The Mayor and Dy.Mayor made a point that a subway near the court is very essential and the same is pending from 1998.

Main signals will be fitted with CC TVs was also a new plan.

Rs.4.5 crores were kept aside in the first grant of 100 crore for the indoor stadium and Laser park, the cost has now escalated to 25 crore and more funds will be demanded the Commissioner said.

In all the second 100 crore will also go into the drains. Nothing big or extensive has been planned which is the real need. Why not funds like these be utilised for something very constructive and put the funds to use in 4-5 big projects like subways, flyovers and ease the traffic problem.

By fixing CC Tv cameras one cannot ease the traffic problem. The city does not have a CDP (city development Plan) the one we are currently using is old and outdated.

Still work under the first 100 crore is incomplete and nothing is being done to complete that and now the second grant. The corporation gets funds for making roads, gutters, street lighting etc under various schemes of the govt. then why utilise the special grant also for the same works.

Rs.30 crore are being spent currently on the city for its beautification for the Vishwa Kannada sammelana. This mainly includes beautification of circles and few roads.

Why cant a new parking lot be constructed by this fund ?

Why not a subway at the Court ?

Why not a flyover at First gate or Kapileshwar road rail crossing?

In all this is nothing but old wine in a new bottle, same works each year. God Bless Belgaum.

    • Detailed report on ring road

BELGAUM: The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), which deals with issues related urban traffic, will shortly submit a comprehensive transport and traffic plan for Belgaum city to the government. The plan recommends two ring roads, seven radial-connectivity roads and seven missing link roads for the city, all of which are estimated to cost Rs 1,364 crore.

New Delhi-based transport planning company ICRA Management Consulting Services Ltd had prepared the plan and submitted to DULT, the monitoring agency.

Speaking to `The Times of India’, Belgaum Urban Development Authority commissioner V S Chougule said the plan has been prepared keeping in the view the growth of Belgaum till 2028.

The details of the plan’s final draft are as follows: 41.53-km outer ring road (ORR) connecting Kakati, Sulaga, Udyambag, Majagaon, Kalakhamb, Managutti and Kakati villages; 60-m wide road of four lanes, two service roads and as many lanes for public transport. The project is estimated at Rs 986 crore.

The company has also recomended 16.88-km, 30-m wide inner ring road (IRR) linking Ashok Circle, RTO Circle, Channamma Circle, College Road, Bogarves, Gogte Circle, Tilakwadi II Railway Gate, Khanapur Road, Deshmukh Road, Nath Pai Circle, Old PB Road, Manikbag and PBS Circle. The project cost is estimated at Rs 22 crore. The company has also recommended to acquire land to include footpaths. However, the existing 24-m Old Pune-Bangalore Road has not been included in the plan.
