58 persons awaiting verdict on mercy petition at Hindlaga Jail

58 persons sentenced to death and lodged in Hindalga central jail in Belgaum are awaiting the final verdict on their mercy petition from the President of India. The department of Prisons is ready to execute the sentence if the President of India rejects the mercy petitions and finally orders that the convicts be hanged. The department has also identified a hangman.jail

The Hindalga jail was built by the British in 1923 and has three gallows. The last hanging was done in November 1983 of Hanumant Malla, convicted of five murders.

The Hindalga Jail spreads over an area of 99 acres. It has a capacity to accommodate 1,162 prisoners.
