Abandoning the Elderly: turning the district hospital into an unintended old age home

A disturbing trend is emerging where elderly parents, once the pillars of their families, are being abandoned by their children. Whether rich or poor, many elderly individuals are left to fend for themselves, turning the Belagavi district hospital into an unintended old age home.

Currently, over 62 elderly patients are receiving treatment at the Belagavi district hospital, yet their own families refuse to take them back. Many of these seniors were found injured or sick at railway stations, roadsides, and other public places, brought in by kind-hearted citizens or authorities. While some families accept them after treatment, others visit only to get property documents signed—a heartbreaking reality that exposes the selfishness of their children.

Hospital authorities reveal that many relatives initially promise to take their parents home but later ignore calls or switch off their phones, leaving the elderly in a state of destitution. Some blatantly refuse to accept them, treating their parents as burdens rather than the caregivers who once nurtured them.

In the past two years, the hospital has treated over 150 abandoned elderly patients, with efforts to reunite them with their families. However, despite these attempts, 62 remain hospitalized today, neglected by their blood.

This crisis raises a serious moral question: What kind of society are we becoming when the very people who raised us are discarded when they need us most? The abandonment of elderly parents is not just a personal failure—it is a social disaster that needs urgent attention. Respect and responsibility towards our elders must be upheld, or we risk losing the values that define us as a community.

  1. People are smart and busy now a days not every story is Baghban though? And not all the children shown in Bagbhan is also true, growing harbouring gaps diminishing family ethics and moral values have lead to such situations but reason can be many,
Of every mid aged adult today it is either burden or responsibility to choose between and resentment over petty issue , retried grandpa at home and serving father at home and son out in different city to earn, well then these phone connects and some voice talks, here our society miss-out the vital dinner table talk, the gap widens connects fades
