Tilakwadi Female Education Society started the Balika Adarsh Vidyalaya 86 years ago. An alumni meet of all its batches from 1937 to 2024 has been organized at Ramnath Mangal Karyalaya (Bhagyanagar) on Sunday 26th May 2024. Minister Mrs. Laxmi Hebbalkar is the Chief Guest for the inaugural function and Dr. Aswari Sant is the keynote speaker.

Inspired by the work of Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, Sumitrabai Sohoni started this school in 1937 with just two rooms. At that time, female education was not encouraged at all. So she had to literally go house to house to motivate parents to send their daughters to school. She was joined by Kamalabai Chhatre and the two were instrumental in growing this small school. Surprisingly, even today when English Medium Schools are popular, this school has seen full admissions, with current strength being over 1200 students.

The management has had to decline admissions many times owing to a lack of classrooms. Most students come from economically weak backgrounds and the school is a beacon of hope for their lives to flourish. Balika Adarsh was the first school to get the Atal Tinkering Lab in the city. It has a modern turf ground, boxing ring, wrestling mats, modern labs and more. To cater to the growing demand of the students and to rebuild the dilapidated current building, the management has made efforts to raise funds. Of around 40 teachers of the school, only 7 are aided while the others get paid by the school from the minuscule fees that are charged. In spite of all this, the school has managed to give excellent results in academics and extracurricular activities consistently only because of the dedication of the staff.

The alumni meet aims to bring together all the students from the beginning and appraise them of the school’s current scenario. The whole day will see several cultural programs and meet-and-greet in the first session and a school visit in the latter half.  It also aims to raise funds for the urgent construction of a new building. Well-wishers from Belagavi and elsewhere can also contribute generously to this noble purpose.
