The long-delayed Belagavi–Dharwad railway line has finally gained decisive momentum, with the Belagavi district administration completing acquisition of nearly 1,200 acres in a record four-month span. The breakthrough, led by Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Roshan, effectively removes the biggest hurdle that had stalled the 73-km project for years.
A total compensation package of around ₹300 crore has been sanctioned for affected landowners. Of this, ₹60 crore has already been directly credited to farmers’ bank accounts, with the remaining amount set for phased disbursal. Officials indicated that once compensation distribution is completed, groundwork for the project is expected to commence by December.
Initially, the project required about 1,436 acres, and while most acquisition within Belagavi district are now complete, a small portion in Dharwad district remains pending and is likely to be resolved shortly.
Despite resistance from nearly 180 farmers and landowners in the early stages, the administration managed to address concerns through sustained dialogue and counselling. Authorities said the landowners ultimately agreed, keeping larger public interest in mind.
Approved under a 50:50 cost-sharing model between the Centre and the State, the rail line will pass through Kittur and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Belagavi and Dharwad, providing a major boost to regional connectivity and economic activity.
With land acquisition now largely behind it, the project appears firmly back on track, raising hopes that this long-awaited rail link will soon become a reality.
