DC Mohammad Roshan directs corporation to expedite feeding zones and permanent sterilisation centre
Belagavi Municipal Corporation has been directed to establish 30 designated feeding zones for stray dogs before October 2, following a review meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan.
Earlier, 26 locations had been identified for feeding zones, but the number has now been increased to 30. The DC directed officials to ensure that the zones have proper feeding arrangements and display boards, and that feeding is restricted to these designated locations.
The move follows months of delay despite earlier discussions involving the municipal corporation and PETA representatives.
The DC also directed officials to inspect a site near Savgaon for establishing a permanent stray dog sterilisation centre. Officials from the Animal Husbandry and municipal construction departments inspected the site on Tuesday to assess its suitability, available space and infrastructure requirements.
The need for a permanent facility has gained urgency amid complaints regarding the temporary sterilisation centre at Hirebagewadi.
The corporation estimates that more than 22,000 stray dogs are present in the city. Rising complaints of dog attacks and concerns over rabies have further highlighted the need for systematic sterilisation, vaccination and regulated feeding.
Designated feeding zones are intended to ensure that dogs are fed at fixed locations and times, while keeping feeding away from sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals and playgrounds. The system is also expected to make it easier for authorities to identify, vaccinate and sterilise stray dogs.
