The environmental laboratory plays a very important role in assessing the status of environmental components such as soil, water, air, flora, fauna and human beings. An environmental laboratory is a laboratory processing samples taken from the environmental media both from the environment as well as from sources disposed into the environment (industries, domestic and agriculture sources, automobiles etc.).

North Karnataka is a gateway of industrial development in the state of Karnataka. The atmosphere provides basic requirements for industrial development such as raw materials, land, water and human resource. At the same time, it is necessary to protect the environment besides industrial development. Hence, there is need of a state of art environmental analytical laboratory in North Karnataka to meet the demands of industrial requirements.

In this direction, Smt. Shanta M. Dambal, Shri. Shivanand M. Dambal, Smt. Chandana S. Dambal and Ms. Padmashree S. Damabl native of Belgaum have promoted Belgaum Test House. Shri. Shivanand M. Dambal is an Environmental Engineering graduate from Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering; Mysore has felt the need for a sophisticated environmental laboratory to cater to the needs of north Karnataka and promoted Belgaum Test House. The laboratory is employed 75 people locally.

The laboratory is equipped to collect data on Meteorology, Ambient Air Quality Monitoring as per National Ambient Air Quality Standards, 2009, Indoor Air quality, Noise Level Measurements as per Noise Pollution (Regulation & Control) Rules, 2000. The laboratory also conducts stationary source emission monitoring (Stack Monitoring) for industries and other establishments as per the Air (Prevention and control of pollution) Act, 1981.

The laboratory is testing packaged drinking water, natural mineral water, portable water / ground water as per BIS standards. The laboratory is also equipped to conduct tests on waste water viz., industrial effluents, sewage, etc as per approvals issued by the State Pollution Control Board under the Water (Prevention and control of pollution) Act, 1974.

The laboratory is conducting tests to understand the quality of soil parameters especially in agricultural fields, industrial premises, etc where quality of soil is directly connected with pollution. The laboratory has facility to test the leachate samples of solid and hazardous waste also.

The microbiology tests are very important to understand the microbial contamination in water, air and soil. The laboratory is well equipped to conduct various microbiological tests including bio-safety cabinet and clean rooms. The laboratory is also conducting bio-assay tests as per the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 specification to understand the toxicity of effluents / river water, etc by involving live fish specimens.

The laboratory is having high end instruments such as Gas Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) for analysis of heavy metals, pesticides and volatile compounds in various environmental parameters.

The laboratory has facility to tests food products like Bakery and confectionary products, cereals and pulses, coffee and its products, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, Edible Oils & Fats, Jaggery, Nuts and Nuts Products, Edible Common Salt/Iodised Salt, Tea and Tea Products, Sugar and Sugar Products, Spices and, Honey and Honey Products, Processed Foods.

The Laboratory is spreads across 10000 Sqft and first of its kind in North Karnataka. The laboratory design includes good spacing, proper ventilation system, well-ventilated stack rooms, store rooms, laboratory hoods, sinks, clean rooms, bio safety cabinets, field data collection equipment’s and other infrastructures.

Belgaum Test House is also providing environmental consultancy services to government and private firms in terms of preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment Reports, obtaining Environmental Clearance from Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), obtaining consents and approvals from Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), conducting independent environmental audits for industries, etc. Other services includes preparation of Social Impact Assessment reports, onsite and offsite emergency reports for industries, etc.
