Amid a noticeable rise in road accidents across the city, the police have stepped up enforcement of traffic regulations, with a strong focus on helmet compliance and curbing drunk driving. Police Commissioner Belagavi, Bhushan Borase, announced a special drive aimed at improving road safety and discipline.

As part of the campaign, special checkpoints will be set up at key junctions, highways, and accident-prone stretches to take strict action against violators. Helmet use for two-wheeler riders will be enforced rigorously, with fines for offenders and stricter penalties for repeat violations.

In addition, dedicated night squads will monitor and act against drunk driving. Breathalyser tests will be conducted, and those found driving under the influence will face legal action.

Commissioner Borase emphasized that many accidents can be prevented through basic precautions such as wearing helmets, following speed limits, and avoiding driving after consuming alcohol. He expressed confidence that the drive will help reduce accidents and improve overall traffic discipline. He also pointed out that accident numbersโ€”and related fatalitiesโ€”have increased this year compared to last year, underlining the urgency for strict enforcement.

Meanwhile, the police administration has also decided to take concrete steps to tackle worsening traffic congestion in the busy Ravivar Peth area after meeting local businessmen. The commissioner revealed that a proposal is in place to introduce a one-way traffic system in the locality in the coming days, supported by systematic road planning and clear markings.

Ravivar Peth, one of the cityโ€™s busiest commercial hubs, has been grappling with severe congestion due to narrow roads, increasing vehicle volume, unregulated parking, and encroachments. The situation worsens during peak morning and evening hours, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

Following a detailed traffic study, police are moving ahead with plans to streamline vehicular movement through a one-way system. The initiative will include clearly marked traffic directions, designated parking zones, and โ€˜No Parkingโ€™ areas painted on the roads to bring order and discipline.

Special squads will also be deployed to act against violators, while traders and citizens have been urged to cooperate with the new system. The Commissioner stated that the effective implementation of these measures can significantly ease congestion in Ravivar Peth.

He further added that, as an immediate step, barricades have already been installed near the Market Police Station, and a one-way traffic flow has been introduced on the stretch leading towards Jijamata Chowk.
