Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new terminal at Belagavi Airport. Emphasizing the government’s dedication to nationwide progress, the Prime Minister highlighted various initiatives ranging from airport upgrades to infrastructure enhancements during the event held virtually on Sunday, March 10.

The government’s efforts extend beyond mere announcements, with ongoing developmental projects aimed at fostering growth across the nation. Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of creating an enabling environment for comprehensive development, including the construction of railway stations, railway lines, and the implementation of key policies like the New Education Policy and Kisan Sammana Yojana.

Speaking about the significance of the occasion, Prime Minister Modi stressed the government’s focus on identifying opportunities in smaller cities, such as Belagavi, for infrastructure development. He emphasized the creation of job opportunities and initiatives to boost agricultural productivity, citing advancements in technology that will lead to the production of ethanol and biogas from sugarcane crops.

The foundation stone laying ceremony marked a significant milestone for Belagavi Airport, which is poised to witness a transformation with the construction of the new terminal. Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated similar projects at 15 other airports across the country simultaneously, demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing air connectivity nationwide.

Local leaders echoed the sentiment of progress, with Rajya Sabha member Eranna Kadadi highlighting Belagavi’s historical significance and its strategic importance for national security. He emphasized the district’s contribution to industries like ISRO, Chandrayaan, and Defence underscoring its pride in facilitating such endeavors. He said that a special design has been made in Belagavi on the model of Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport.

The new terminal at Belagavi Airport aims to elevate passenger experience by offering enhanced facilities, including lifts, expanded parking, and improved aircraft infrastructure. With a tender already issued for the project at an estimated cost of Rs 230 crore, the airport is set to undergo a transformation aligned with the standards of major international airports.

KMV Projects has secured the contract for the civil construction work of the new terminal building at Belagavi Airport for 220 crores. The upcoming terminal will feature 4 aerobridges, significantly boosting the airport’s handling capacity to 2,400 passengers during peak hours (1,200 arrivals and 1,200 departures). Once operational, the existing terminal will be repurposed to manage arrivals. AAI’s consultants, Landrum and Brown, predict that this expansion will enable the airport to cope with a traffic demand of 2.0 million passengers per annum (mppa) until 2037.

Smt. Mangala Angadi, the Member of Parliament representing Belagavi, emphasized plans for enhancing infrastructure at Belagavi Airport. She highlighted upcoming initiatives including road widening and the provision of adequate parking facilities aimed at accommodating increased flight traffic effectively. Angadi also expressed the commitment to diligently work towards elevating Belagavi Airport to international standards shortly.

Adding to this, Kadadi noted the historical significance of the region, particularly in light of the 200 years of Kittur Victory Festival. He revealed a proposal to the Central Government for the installation of a statue honoring the historic figure, Kittur Rani Channamma, in front of Belagavi Airport, underscoring the region’s rich heritage and contributions to Indian history.

The event saw the participation of various dignitaries, including local MLAs, government representatives, and airport officials, signaling a collaborative effort towards realizing the vision of a modernized Belagavi Airport. As the region looks towards a future marked by progress and connectivity, the foundation stone laying ceremony symbolizes a significant step towards achieving these aspirations.
