Karnataka has become the first state to give legal protection to good samaritans through The Karnataka Good Samaritan and Medical Professional (Protection and Regulation during Emergency Situations) Bill, 2016, after the President of India Shri Ramnath Kovind gave his assent to the bill.
During the Belagavi session of the State legislature, the government passed the Karnataka Good Samaritan and Medical Professional (Protection and Regulation During Emergency Situations) Bill, 2016. The Bill aimed to provide protection to Good Samaritans and ensure quick medical aid for road accident victims and encourage people to offer first aid to victims without fear of legal wrangles.
Bystanders often refrain from helping due to the fear of legal and procedural hassles, now with the passing of this law is aimed to provide protection to Good Samaritans and ensure quick medical aid for road accident victims and encourage people to offer first aid to victims without fear of legal wrangles.
The legislation covers the costs of “running around to courts and police stations” and grants the “Samaritans” exemption from repeated attendance in courts. It also makes it mandatory for all government and private hospitals to give first aid to accident victims. Karnataka accounted for a significantly high number of road accident fatalities in 2016 and 2015.
Good News for All citizens of Belagavi. However, a watch should be kept for Non-exploitation of this facility by un-wanted elements in the public. And the authorities should follow the guidelines in Letter and Spirit. Hope other Union states also follow this example. Jai-Hind….
