Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum has organized the International Conference on Optical Engineering during 26th to 28th July 2012 at “Jnana Sangama”, Belgaum. The inaugural function of the Conference was held on 27th July 2012 at 11.00am. Sri Anbukkumar, Deputy Commissioner, Belgaum and Dr. R. K. Shevgaonkar, Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi were Chief Guests on the occasion.

Dr. R. K. Shevgaonkar delivered the key-note address on the topic “Photonic Crystals”. He said that Photonic crystals are structures with periodic variation of refractive index. Examples in nature are wings of butterfly and many flowers. In applications we can create artificial photonic crystals. They can be created in fibers or on silicon wavefer like photonic integrated circuits. They have many applications like in optical communications, sensors and in antennas. Some Universities in India like Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore are doing research on Photonic srystals.vtu

On this occasion, Prof. Shevgaonkar has brought a polymer photonic crystal and demonstrated to audience.

Sri V. Anbukkumar, Deputy Commissioner, Belgaum delivered inaugural address. He said that technical education determines the development and socio-economic condition of a nation. A high quality engineer or technician can be created only through high quality engineering and technical education. He opined that, VTU is known for imparting quality technical education in our country and this University will grow up to the international standard.

Dr. H. Maheshappa, Vice Chancellor, VTU presided over the function and said that, recently, there has been a rush of innovations in the field of Optical Engineering which prove a lot of interest among the researchers as well as common man who look at the benefits of its research applications.

Our University is organizing first International Conference on Optical Engineering in “Jnana Sanagama”, Campus at Belgaum with the objective to provide a platform to all researchers in the subject area of Optical Engineering and to interact and share their findings and discuss their ideas with co-researchers from all over the world.

The Souvenir containing the abstracts of research papers which will be presented during the International conference was released on this occasion. About 200 delegates from different countries are participating in the conference.
