Israeli students visiting VTU and Belagavi to explore sustainable design

The Institute of Environmental Architecture (IEAR), Mumbai, in collaboration with the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, the Hebrew University, Jerusalem and VTU Belagavi launched the Fourth international interdisciplinary Indo-Israel certificate program on ‘Sustainable Design – SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL – A study of design as if people mattered’ – SIB 2019.

The program was inaugurated by the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Vishweshwaraya University, Dr. Karisidappa in the presence of Dr. Roshni Udyavar Yehuda, President, IEAR, Mr. Shivpur, Regional Director VTU, Asst. Prof. Rohan Gurav, and the chief guest of the program, Prof. Elad Persov, Design Management Faculty at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, Israel.

Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design is the leading design academy in Israel and Hebrew University is one of the top hundred universities worldwide.

Eleven students from Israel’s Bezalel Academy and the Hebrew University arrived in Belagavi on Sunday to participate in the workshop along with eleven participants from India. The participants are from graduates and undergraduates from varied disciplines such as architecture, engineering, social work, environmental engineering, computer science and fashion design. Over a period of 8 days, they will be exploring and learning from 5 local houses and communities identified in Belgavi. They will develop innovative design concepts that will suggest improvements on different scales of sustainability.

israel-vtuEach team will explore sustainability through interdisciplinary, multi-cultural and human-based perspectives. Some of the houses identified for the study include Kudale residence in Shahpur, Urankar residence in Church street, Bhatkande residence in Piranwadi and Uppin Residence on Swami Vivekanand Marg. The program also includes a heritage walk conducted by Dr. Smita Surebankar, visit Swami Vivekanand Memorial and the Vedic village Gokhuldham near Bhimghad.

The outcome of the study by participants will be presented at the Senate Hall, VTU on 16 September 2019 (between 2 to 5 pm). The program is open for people of Belagavi. For more details, contact Asst Prof. Rohan Gurav, Program coordinator, 9743821810.
