Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee was on a day visit to Belgaum to take part in the VTU convocation and he delivered his convocational address. In his speech he said that 2008 global crisis hampered India’s growth. Finance minister also said that UPA govt had taken numerous steps by which the Indian economy would grow at Double digit GDP. The government has assured to support the National Skill Development Corporation towards skill upgradation programmes of the youth.The government has set an ambitious target of US$ 1 Trillion investment for infrastructure development in the 12th Plan.
VTU also conferred honorary “Doctorate of Science” (Honoris Causa) degree upon four prominent persons in recognition of their contribution and services in the field of higher education – Chairman of of Aditya Birla Group Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of All India Council for Technical Education Dr.S.S. Mantha, former Vice-Chancellor of of University of Roorkee Padma Shri Dr.H.C. Visvesvaraya and posthumously on late M.S. Ramaiah, founder president of Gokul Education Foundation, Bangalore, which was received by his sons M.R. Jayaram and Seetharam R.
Later Pranab Muhkerjee visited the Ramkrishna Mission Ashrama in the fort to pay his respects to the patriot monk, Swami Vivekananda.
During his tour around the Ashrama, the Hon’ble Minister spent some time to pay his respects at the very house in Fort where Swamiji had stayed for 9 days in October 1892. He then offered his pranams in the Universal Temple of Sri Ramakrishna at the Ashrama.
He then spent some time interacting with Swami Raghaveshananda, Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Belgaum and other monks and partook lunch Prasad.
