Belagavi City Corporation has mandated that traders selling tobacco products within city limits must obtain a separate license. This directive aligns with a 2022 Central Government notification requiring dedicated permits for the sale of tobacco products.
The application process for this license is now open, with a deadline of February 15. The application fee has been set at ₹500, and forms are available at the City Corporation office. Applicants must submit the following documents along with the application:
- A valid trade license issued by the City Corporation.
- Aadhaar card of both the applicant and the establishment owner.
- Proof of tenancy or ownership of the premises where tobacco products are sold.
- A recent passport-sized photograph of the applicant.

City Corporation officials emphasized that this initiative aims to regulate tobacco sales more effectively and discourage condiments and tobacco co-sales at the same location. “We are implementing this directive in compliance with Central Government regulations, which categorize tobacco as a distinct trade,”.
Failure to obtain the license by February 15 will result in legal action against violators. Sellers must also hold a valid business license in addition to the new tobacco sales license.
