The district police are investigating a hit-and-run incident that occurred near Ambadgatti Cross on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway in the early hours of Tuesday. Women and Child Welfare Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar and her brother, MLC Channaraj Hattiholi, sustained injuries when their SUV veered off the road and struck a tree.

Superintendent of Police Dr. Bheemashankar Guled addressed reporters on Wednesday, detailing the sequence of events. Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of a canter swerved abruptly to avoid a dog on the road. The SUV’s driver, attempting to evade a collision, moved left, resulting in the SUV brushing against the canter before skidding onto the service road and hitting a tree. The canter driver fled the scene, leading police to file a hit-and-run case.

Dr. Guled confirmed that over 40 canters crossed the Hirebagewadi toll plaza on the highway, and efforts are underway to identify the vehicle involved.

Police inspected the accident site, noting that the SUV had been towed to a showroom before the panchnama was filed. Upon inspecting the vehicle, officers found marks consistent with contact from a canter. Dr. Guled added that the decision to move the vehicle from the scene will also be part of the investigation.

While political motives were not mentioned in the complaint, Dr. Guled assured that all angles would be explored thoroughly. The investigation continues as the police work to trace the canter and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The minister is responding well to treatment and resting due to a spinal cord injury. There is no cause for concern at present,” Dr. Ravi stated while speaking to reporters.

The car driver and the minister’s bodyguard, who were also injured in the accident, have received medical care. Dr. Ravi added that Hebbalkar will require at least ten days of rest to recover fully. Another individual involved in the incident, MLC Channaraja Hattiholi, has also been advised rest.

  1. We should start by arresting the dog first. let’s see what it has to say for itself and if it was hired for this job by someone. Then we will go after the canter.
