What is the solution for traffic Jams ?

Photo of author

In a joint meeting held at the City corporation office where officials from the Traffic Police, City Corporation, NWKRTC, RTO and Cantonment board officials participated and discussed the issue of traffic congestion in Belagavi city.

Even tough no concrete solution were put forward but the meeting does highlight the pity state of the traffic in the city.

Some points discussed :

Parking on widened roads will be stopped
Marking of Footpath and putting Grills

Basement to be used for parking only

Hawkers to be contained and Corporation needs to act on this

Ring road a must so that HTV traffic can be diverted

No Parking and Parking zones to be marked with lines

Bus drivers of NWKRTC will be told to stop at designated bus stops

Act on Illegal Share autos (Vadap)

4 bus terminals in city so that city bus service can be expanded

Parking in-front of KLE hospital and in-front of colleges was also discussed

No vehicle zone in Market
Khade Bazar to be made One way

There are specific areas where the Police must impose the ONE WAY rule again for smooth flow of traffic. Some one the many one ways which existed were removed after road widening but with the huge rise in the number of vehicles the authorities must rethink and impose One way again.

The Globe cinema circle is facing a lot of issues and with no Cops or signals it is a mess all the time.
Similar situation at Samadevi Temple corner and Gondhali Galli corner.

  1. Also need to set the speed limit in city, this will save a lot many lives of people from reckless drivers, auto rickshaws must be strictly run on meters.

  2. There is absoloutely no regard or respect to traffic rules in the city. People drive in opposite lanes in double road including elite people using swanky cars. Two wheelers and autos and milk vehicles etc drive at reckless speed in opposite direction in double roads. Parking is free anywhere. I feel there should be community service for traffic violation ( like offenders should be made to clean roads etc).
All colleges should educate their students on how to obey traffic rules , this is very important in order to create sage driving in our city.

  3. 1st REMOVE ALL BUS STOP & AUTO STAND WHICH WAS NEAR BY ALL TRAFFIC SIGNALS. AND MAKE DIRECT FLYOVER FROM GANDHI NAGAR (FORT LAKE) & KLE HOSPITAL TO PEERANWADI/MACHHE FOR HEAVY VEHICALS. AND IT GIVES VERY LESS DIVERSIONS.

  4. People who have not sold their useless brains whatsapp and facebook should start using bicycle for intra-city commute. I do three days (compulsorily) in a 5 day work week. I have two two wheelers at home use them sparingly. On sunday, it is bicycles mostly.

Walking for short distance around their home or office.

Free parking on the roads should be discouraged and charge of Rs50/- per hour parking should be levied.

RTO today is not checking whether riders have license or not, even children of 10-11 years are riding with their parents clapping and proudly saying that my child can ride a vehicle. Fools don’t know about accident statistics.

Everyone wants rickshaws to run on meter. Then whenever you want to hail a rickshaw ask if you are coming on meter I am boarding or else walk away. If a 1000 people do it everyday, then meters will start to run even without protest.

Protest to get more city buses on all routes, today they can use analytics from which area and what time how many people move in which directions. Ask for hybrid or electric buses.

  5. We need to think of demotorisation and encourage non motorised movement. Pedestrianisation of some of the streets in the CBD is much needed. Cycling should be given priority on all roads and there should be some sense of ‘design’ to the roads. Roads are not just a surface for wheels to roll, it has to cater to multiple modes of transportation. Number, reach & frequency of city buses needs to be increased drastically.
We need to understand that flyovers are not the solution. Flyovers only encourage the number of vehicles on road to grow. The idea should be to help people move easily within the city, not vehicles.
