Third successful heart transplant at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Belagavi

A 25-year young male from Goa got a new lease of life after a successful heart transplant by the team of Cardiac Surgeons led by Dr. Richard Saldanha at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital, Belagavi on 16th March 2022. The heart of a Brain-dead man from Belagavi was transplanted to the young Goan. This is the 3rd successful heart transplant and the first Goan to undergo a heart transplant at KLES Hospital.

The patient was a known case of chronic terminal heart failure and was registered for heart transplant with Jeevsarthakathe (Organ Transplant Authority, Govt. of Karnataka) by the hospital in 2018. Dr. Richard Saldanha, Chief Cardiac Surgeon who performed the heart transplant said, since no matching/suitable donors were available, he was medically maintained, closely supervised & was on treatment. His long wait was over when a suitable blood group A+ve donor was declared brain dead and the family consented to organ donation.

The transplant was carried out successfully, the postoperative recovery was excellent and he is being discharged with a new heart. The patient is walking, climbing stairs and in a cheerful mood said his mother.

Briefing to media on the discharge of the patient Dr. Prabhakar Kore, Chairman of the KLE Society said, we are committed to extending world-class health care at a bare minimum cost. He highlighted that the philosophy of the KLE Society is selfless service to humanity. He said the cost of heart transplant is Rs, 20-25 lakh in Metro cities, but our Society Hospital provides the same procedure at Rs. 10 lakhs, which is the standing testimony of our commitment to the needy people.

Dr. Richard Sadhana, Chief Cardiac Surgeon stressed, Heart Transplant is a gigantic team effort which involved specialists from Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Cardiac Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Intensivists, Transplant Coordinators, Perfusionists, Operation room & ITU nurses, Technicians, Mohan Foundation and Jeevasarthakathe.

Shivam’s family has expressed profound thanks to the donor family and the team of surgeons lead by Dr. Richard Saldanha. Govt. of Goa (Goa Mediclaim) has contributed substantial fund for the heart transplant.
