On Friday the work on the Halga Macche bypass was commenced in the presence of Police and even DC MG Hiremath visited the spot.
The government acquired 134 acres for a 9.5-km bypass road between Halaga and Mache. A part of the land acquired for the work is said to be fertile, which has enraged a section of the affected farmers.
Around 8-10 farmers have denied part with their fertile land and protested by sitting on their land.
The farmers showed the DC the full-grown crops like sugar cane, rice and carrots.
If all of a sudden the standing crop which is near harvest is destroyed the farmers will be at a great loss as they have spent money and labor on the same, the farmers argued.
DC said he will try to get more compensation for the same and also would arrange for irrigation for the remaining piece of land, to a protesting farmer.
A total of 27 crores is the compensation paid to 825 persons the DC said.
If the land remaining is small, we will try and identify alternate land for them, he added.
About 130 acres of land will have to be acquired for the 9-10 km stretch which will pass through Halga, Zadshahpur, Madhavpaur, Old Belagavi, Vadgaon, Shahpur, Mache.
Yesterday Amit Angolkar, a farmer who had climbed a tree and threatened to commit suicide by jumping, said, “We have three acres of fertile land and we will not let it go under any circumstances for the road work. While the actual market price of my land is Rs 8 lakh per acre, the government is paying a measly Rs 1.5 lakh per acre. But I don’t want money and neither do I want to sell my land. If my two-acre land is acquired, it is not possible for our family to survive on only one acre.’’
This is part of the entire Ring road project for Belagavi.
