The Kittur Rani Channamma Zoological Garden at Bhutaramanahatti plans to introduce several new wildlife species, including zebras, giraffes, rare birds, and snakes, to strengthen Belagaviโs wildlife tourism potential.
The zoo authorities have also submitted a proposal to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to upgrade the facility to a medium-category zoological garden. If approved, the proposal could pave the way for expanded infrastructure, improved facilities and a more diverse collection of animals and birds.
The zoo currently houses around 190 animals and birds, including lions, tigers and leopards. The proposed additions are expected to enhance its appeal as a destination for families, wildlife enthusiasts and educational visits.
Zebras and giraffes among proposed additions
The proposed expansion includes zebras and giraffes, which could become major attractions for visitors. Their introduction would give people in Belagavi and surrounding areas a chance to see these animals locally, reducing the need to travel to zoos in Mysuru or Bengaluru.
However, the animals will be brought in only after the necessary approvals are obtained.
Snake park to feature new species
The zoo also plans to develop a more specialised serpentarium, with a wider range of snake species. The proposed additions include the King Cobra, Indian Cobra, Rock Python, Reticulated Python and Green Anaconda.
The expanded facility is expected to help visitors understand the diversity of snakes, their life cycles and their importance in maintaining ecological balance.
In addition, the zoo plans to introduce two gharials to its crocodile enclosure. The addition would provide an opportunity for visitors to learn about these specialised aquatic reptiles and their role in river ecosystems.

New birds to add colour to the zoo
The bird section is also set for expansion, with proposals to introduce species such as the Sun Conure, Birds of Paradise, Zebra Finch and Rose-ringed Parakeet.
Their colourful plumage, distinctive calls and varied behaviour are expected to add to the attraction of the zoo and strengthen its educational value.
Upgrade proposal submitted to CZA
The proposal submitted to the Central Zoo Authority seeks to expand the zooโs area and upgrade its status to a medium-category zoological garden. Approval could enable further infrastructure development and the introduction of a wider variety of wildlife.
The zoo already features a snake park, crocodile enclosure, wildlife museum and auditorium. The proposed additions could further strengthen its role as a destination for wildlife education, family outings and school field trips.
The plans are subject to the required approvals, following which further steps can be taken towards expanding the zooโs animal and bird collection.
