Life in the fast lane took on a new meaning in Sunday’s IRONMAN KAZAKHSTAN Nur-Sultan Ironman Triathlon, where Shivalkar Mother and Son duo from Belagavi made it over the finish line to cover a grueling 226.7 km of swimming, biking and running.
Megh finished in under 11:48:55 hours and stood 1st in his age group 18-24 and while Mayura made it in 15:18:06 hours
Mayura Mihir Shivalkar participated in the Female 45-49 age group while Megh Shivalkar participated in the 18-24 age group in the IRONMAN, the world’s most challenging endurance event.
The full Ironman is 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of biking and 42.2 km of running, all in succession. The task must be completed in less than 17 hours.
Megh is the first Indian triathlete who qualified for the IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Kailua-Kona, Hawai from Oct 6-8 2022.
When Mayura Shivalkar crossed the finish line in 70.3 (miles) Ironman Colombo in February 2018, there wasn’t a winners’ medal waiting for her at the podium- but her family, doctors and people aware of her resilient background, already knew what Mayura had achieved- she became India’s only cancer surviving triathlete to complete the half ironman – a thought that seemed impossible at first.
Both went through painstaking training sessions in the last 10 months and went through different seasons.
Any participant who manages to complete the triathlon in these timings is designated an Ironman.
An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.20 km) run, raced in that order and without a break. It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.
The name “Ironman Triathlon” is also associated with the original Ironman triathlon which is now the Ironman World Championship. Held in Kailua-Kona, the world championship has been held annually in Hawaii since 1978 (with an additional race in 1982) and is preceded by a series of qualifying Ironman events.
