On the eve of the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana held in March in the city, many shops were demolished in many areas like Kelkar Bag & Sai Mandir area.
Now the City Corporation has floated tender to build 50 shops near Sai Mandir. The design has been done by Third space Studio Belgaum.

The tender was floated on 26-07-2011 and last date for submission is 27-08-2011. In all TWO separate tenders have been floated one for 33 shops and another for 17 shops.
So in all 50 shops will be built near Sai Mandir opposite the vegetable market.
The completion period for the project is 6 months from the date of issuance of work order. So, it should take about 8-9 months from now for the new shops to be ready if all goes well.
Praveen Bavdekar of Thirdspace Studio told this blog that, ” The repetitive landscape of neighborhood shops is transformed into an urban sculpture by emphasizing the walls in between and creating a meta form responsive to the context. The walls in-between shops are made explicit, by projecting beyond the shops thus creating a blurred space between shop and street. ”
Not sure to whom these shops will be given to or auctioned. In the earlier meetings held it was decided that the shop owners who were displaced from Kelkar Bag, Sair Mandir area would be restored but no concrete area was mentioned.
The shops will be of the size 1.83 x 2.67.
it looks like this but when constructed it changes like pathetic work..
Whats RTI For? 🙂
Good to see tat the civic body is using the services of well versed architects rather than getting the design done by some petty contractors..
I hope this trend continues in future civic projects too….. So, tat we can hav some innovative designed spaces in our city..
