Belgaum bus stand waiting for the makeover

In February 2009, we had published a story Belgaum bus station will be developed; but even after THREE years nothing has happened, other than that a new plan is being now made at the Hubli headquarters with an estimate of Rs.30 crore.

NWKRTC had invited Request for Proposals for the Development of Modern Bus Station and commercial complex on NWKRTC site at Belgaum on Public Private Partnership (PPP) Basis. The Bids for the same were to be opened on 02.09.2010. The estimated Project Cost was Rs. 25.70 crores and would be built on Lease-cum-Development Format Design-Build-Operate-Transfer (DBOT) basis.

But there were no takers for this plan and even after the RFP/ Tenders were open for two occasions no one actually bid for it.

Proposed structure as in 2009

What that plan was:

The project site (CBT and divisional Workshop) the current bus stand it self. The existing Belgaum Central Bus Station of NWKRTC is located in the heart of Belgaum city on an area of 3.08 acres. The adjacent NWKRTC Divisional Workshop is located on 4.68 acres.

The new bus stand will have 41 bus bays, bus circulation and parking areas, auto-rickshaw lane, taxi parking lane, basement parking for private vehicles, passenger entry/ exit, Terminal building consisting of passenger circulation and waiting areas, ticket/ reservation counters, cloak room, first-aid room, waiting rooms, passenger amenities like drinking water, toilets, yatri nivas etc., restaurant, shops, kiosks and administrative offices, crew restrooms, parcel office and other facilities.

New plan:
The new plan which is being formulated is expected to be on the same lines as the earlier one. The workshop has already been shifted to Auto Nagar. The new plan would have both inter city and city bus terminals under one roof.

Currently the situation of the bus stand is pathetic with water logging, bad odor, pot holes and massive traffic issues for the buses to come in and go out.

With the growing population, proposed traffic would be as follows:

30 bus bays and passenger amenities for around 1,500 passengers presently

41 bus bays and passenger amenities for around 2,000 passengers by 2015 and

74 bus bays and passenger amenities for around 3,700 passengers by 2031

The Hubli old bus stand is also planned to be modernized by building a 6 storey building with Bus Rapid Transit system as well. ROI have already been called for the same.

  1. let us remind NWKRTC that there is another small bus stand which can be developed as Satellite on the lines at Bengaluru. Yeh Kaam Bhi Shuru Ho Jaaye.

  2. please tell them to install solar pv panels for power generation anyhow it is a PPP self-sustaining buildings are the future.

  3. Good News !!!! Along with that a 120 feet connecting Road between New Bus Stand and NH4 (OLD DHARWAD ROAD) is also very much essential. Fort Road to Amba Bhavan Road Widening,Reconstruction of RAILWAY BUS STAND.

      • i AM NOT A CONTRACTOR ,Rather I am well wisher of North Karnataka region for it’s overall

  4. I guess its too late for Belgaum because even small towns and taluka places also got new bus terminals long back. Since Belgaum lies under Hubli headquarters its lagging in railway and bus facilities. Because they always look/develop Hubli and then Belgaum.

  5. It’s very nice that KSRTC bus stand is being modernised at the same better to upgrade to metro level. Namma Belagavi has all features for further developments & hope it will have good infrastructure & employment opprtunities at least in the coming years..!!!

  6. Belagavi defi

Belagavi needs the improved bus stand at the earliest. Allaboutbelgaum should take lead in expediting the work.

    Belagavi definitely needs modernised
