Sambra Airport expansion to be completed by Feb 2015

A review meeting was held at the Sambra (Belgaum) Airport yesterday by DC Jayram along with AAI officials and MP Suresh Angadi, Prabhakar Kore and MLC Kavdagimath. sambrameet

DC said that hopefully the work on the expansion of the runway would be completed by February 2015 latest. After this expansion is complete a Boeing plane could land in Belgaum as well sources said.

There is also a plan for the Naval depot to be built near the airport for which more land will have to be acquired. To oversee the same and for identification of the land the meeting was held. Already 370 acres of land has been acquired for the expansion of the runway. Mr.Kore said that 141 crores have been already Alloted for the said work and hence the expansion work must finish in time. The current runway would be expanded by 470 mtrs to 2300 mtrs.

More land to be acquired: In 1938 about 500 acres of land was acquired for the airport by the Royal British air-force. In 2005 again 370 acres was acquired and now some more land will have to be acquired for the Naval depot. 

What will be in the upgraded Belgaum Airport: 
The existing airport area is 360.34 acres and got an additional area of about 370 acres for its expansion. Hence, the total project area will be 730.34 acres. At present Belgaum airport have one runway oriented 08/26, 1,830m in length, apron of 6,916m2 terminal building of 1200m2 and can handle 90 passengers. At present Belgaum is an operational airport for ATR-72 and operates one flight per day.

After expansion it has been proposed to operate four daily flights of A-321.

Expansion includes all the facilities for safe operation of the aircraft like expansion of existing runway, new terminal building to cater 200 passengers at a time, expansion of apron, air traffic controller, runway end safety area (RESA) etc..

Other miscellaneous facilities will include New ATC tower cum Technical Block, Fire station (category VII), relocation of DVOR, security watch tower new substation, AC plant room, provision of hooter system at access points and provision of explosive detection system.

  1. That’s very good.Belgaum is progressing very fast.I hope it doesn’t lose it’s charm of being a historical place.
    In my view,since we’re going to have a bigger airport with huge planes landing and taking off,shouldn’t the infrastructure be improved as a lot of vehicles will be moving.(Local and international visitors) Thank you.
