Congress Working Committee to Convene in Belagavi: Grand Centenary Celebrations Planned
A meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has finalized plans for the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on December 26 in Belagavi, followed by a public gathering on December 27. These events mark the centenary of the historic 1924 Congress session held in the city.
To commemorate the occasion, the government will release a special postage stamp. In a move inspired by the Mysuru Dasara, 32 kilometers of roads and 30 key circles in Belagavi will be adorned with lights, adding a festive charm to the city.
The 2.1 km Congress road will have a temporary Gopura installation and special articrafts displayed on the sides of railway track.
A significant decision was made to develop the historic Veera Soudha, the venue of the 1924 session, by establishing a library and installing a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Plans also include erecting memorial pillars at 120 locations across Karnataka visited by Gandhi.
The centenary celebrations will also feature the Kannada release of the acclaimed movie Gandhi, directed by Richard Attenborough. An art gallery depicting the 1924 Congress session and the Indian freedom movement will be set up at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi.
Further beautification efforts include installing a bust at Gangadhar Rao Deshpande’s memorial in Kanabaragi and inaugurating a museum to preserve the legacy of the freedom struggle.
