Belagavi city’s first-ever flyover spanning 4.50 kilometres, is an ambitious project that will stretch from National Highway-48 (NH-48) to Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle, and continue towards the NH via Dr.Ambedkar Road and KLE Hospital. The flyover aims to alleviate the growing traffic congestion in the city and is estimated to cost ₹4500 crores.

This project is the brainchild of District In-charge Minister Satish Jarakiholi and has secured approval from Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The flyover’s strategic design will ensure smoother vehicular movement, particularly through critical junctions like Ashoka Circle and Sangolli Rayanna Circle (R.T.O.), and will extend up to the Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle, reconnecting with the NH near ICMR.

Preparation and Timeline

Currently, the project is in its initial stages, with the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) as the next critical step. The DPR will outline the technical and financial details necessary for the successful execution of the project. This process typically takes 6 to 12 months, depending on the complexity of the project and the speed of approvals.

Once the DPR is finalized, the tendering process will begin. This involves inviting bids from contractors to undertake the construction work. The tendering process can take an additional 6 to 9 months, as it includes multiple stages such as bid evaluation, selection of contractors, and finalizing contracts.

Construction Phase

With the DPR completed and contracts awarded, the actual construction of the flyover can commence. Given the scope and scale of the project, construction is expected to take around 3 to 4 years. This timeline accounts for potential challenges such as land acquisition, environmental clearances, and coordination with ongoing urban development projects.

Key Features of the Flyover

  • Rotaries at Major Junctions: To ease traffic flow, rotaries will be constructed at Ashoka Circle and Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle.
  • Three Ramps for Traffic Flow: The flyover will feature three ramps to streamline traffic. These ramps will connect key areas like the bus stand, RTO, and Mahantesh Nagar at Ashoka Circle, as well as other critical junctions.
  • Service Road to Sambra Airport: An additional service road through a proposed Road Over Bridge (ROB) will provide direct access to Sambra Airport.

Estimated Timeline

  • DPR Preparation: 6-12 months
  • Tendering Process: 6-9 months
  • Construction: 3-4 years

Overall, the entire project from DPR preparation to the completion of construction could span approximately 5 to 6 years, provided there are no significant delays.

This flyover project is set to be a game-changer for Belagavi, addressing current traffic challenges and laying the foundation for future urban growth.
