Supermarkets in the city like Dmart were closed after the City Corporation asked to be closed were witness to dense crowds over the weekend as several people resorted to some panic buying in view of COVID-19 scare.
The DMart Nehru Nagar was shut while the one at Tilakwadi was open until 7.45 PM while we wrote this story. Big Bazar was closed at 7.45 PM.
Belagavi doesn’t have malls but has these supermarkets like Big Bazar, Reliance Mart, Reliance Fresh and Dmart, etc which have dense crowds. All street-side food stalls have been removed by the City Corporation in many areas already.
Many say a blanket ban on the opening of malls, without making any alternate provisions to ensure the daily supply of these goods can add to the public’s fears.
Anxiety in people’s minds is that if supermarkets remain closed, then the local kiranas could take advantage of the situation and hike their prices.
In Belagavi the panic buying was not an issue as it has been seen in the metros as each neighborhood has its own provision store.
Already the sanitizers are out of stock and people are resorting to buying liquid soaps as an alternative.
You don’t have to buy so much. Take it easy. Just relax.
