A grand three-day conference commemorating the centenary of the historic 1924 All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Belagavi is set to take place, announced KPCC President and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar. The event, marking a century since Mahatma Gandhi presided over the session, is envisioned as a milestone in Congress history and a testament to its enduring legacy.
Addressing a preliminary meeting on Friday, Shivakumar emphasized the significance of collective effort and participation to ensure the program’s success. “This event is not just a celebration but a proud moment for all Congress workers. Every worker in Belagavi must mobilize 5,000 participants for the event,” he stated.
The conference will feature participation from 150 MPs(including former MP’s), 40 Congress Committee presidents, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and other senior leaders. Key events include an executive committee meeting on December 26, followed by a Congress workers’ conference on December 27. The CPED ground in Belagavi will serve as the primary venue for these historic gatherings.
The event will also witness the presence of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, further elevating its significance. Shivakumar concluded by urging all party workers, MLAs, and former legislators to take personal responsibility for making the centenary celebrations a resounding success.
The Karnataka government is investing ₹7 crores in illuminating Belagavi for the celebrations, drawing parallels to the grandeur of Mysuru Dasara. The lighting installations will remain for a week, allowing residents and visitors to experience the festive ambience.
To strengthen grassroots presence, Congress has announced the inauguration of 100 new party offices across the state, with Venugopal and Surjewala expected to guide the initiatives next week.
Highlighting the historical relevance, Shivakumar recalled Gandhi’s simplicity and impact during the 1924 session, where he symbolically brought water from a well and lit a fire on the road, leaving an indelible mark on Belagavi’s history.
The centenary celebrations hold special significance as Karnataka’s Mallikarjun Kharge currently presides as the AICC President. “It is a matter of pride that 100 years after Gandhi’s leadership, a son of Karnataka leads the Congress at the national level,” Shivakumar remarked.
Shivakumar stressed that the conference is not only a commemoration but also a stepping stone for Congress’s resurgence in Karnataka and beyond. “The Belagavi program should pave the way for Congress’s return to power in 2028. This event will write a new chapter in our party’s history,” he affirmed.
