Members of the Belagavi Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) and traders met Deputy Commissioner N Jayram today and  strongly opposed the government’s decision to impose a blanket ban on plastic carry bags and other plastic items without specifying the thickness.

The protest rally which culminated by handing over the memorandum to the DC says the centre also banned use of plastic carry bags of less than 50 microns in thickness as against the existing norms of less than 40 microns.

There were a large number of small scale industries in the district engaged in manufacturing of plastic products, employing thousands of employees.

Venkatesh Sarnobat president of the BCCI urged to state govt to withdraw this notification and at the same time initiate strict action against the manufacture of plastic products below 50 microns.
