Belagavi is set to host grand celebrations next month to mark the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s sole tenure as Congress president. The announcement was made following a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi.
Addressing the media, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal shared, “On December 26, 1924, Mahatma Gandhi was elected Congress president at the historic Belgaum session. To commemorate this centenary, we will hold an extended Working Committee meeting followed by a massive rally in Belagavi.”
Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh elaborated on the planned events, stating they will take place on December 26 and 27. The program includes a significant public rally and the meeting of the extended CWC.
Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency of the Indian National Congress, from December 1924 to April 1925, was a singular chapter in the party’s history. His tenure ended when Sarojini Naidu succeeded him at the Kanpur session. This historic milestone remains the only time Gandhi assumed leadership of the Congress.
The centenary celebration aims to honor Gandhi’s enduring legacy and the pivotal role Belagavi played in the freedom movement.
