First ever Trans Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement, first such procedure in this part of the country

Department of Cardiology at KLE’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC, Belagavi of KLE Academy of Higher Education & Research is conducting it’s first ever Trans Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement, the first such procedure in this part of the country which till now is conducted at only a few select metros of our country available only since past one year.

Aortic stenosis (Narrowing of the main valve of the heart) occurs in about 25% of elderly individuals over the age of 65 years & almost 40% of these individuals cannot be offered this complex open heart Aortic valve Replacement surgery due to co-morbid conditions like Stroke, Parkinson’s, COPD (Asthma), Kidney disease or general debility & its prolonged and stormy recovery period spanning over months.

This novel technique of percutaneous Aortic valve Replacement has come as a boon for these people in which a tissue valve mounted over a balloon is inserted through the groin under local anaesthesia and placed in the heart in the place of the original pre-existing valve, thus avoiding the need to cut open the chest and its associated host of complications and all this in just about 90 minutes with negligible side effects or complications and almost instant recovery.

This procedure is highly successful the globe under the select few experienced operators and the Department of Cardiology, KLE’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC, Belagavi has got novel technology to Belagavi and has performed its first-ever percutaneous Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement procedure on Friday 29.03.2019.

It was also a matter of pride as the artificial heart valve used was manufactured in India Gujarat based Meril Life Sciences, which is half the cost of American valve and having equal safety standard thus fulfilling the concept of make in India.

This procedure was done by Dr. Suresh V Patted, Prof & Head, Department of Cardiology & his team comprising of Dr. Sanjay C Porwal, Dr. Sameer Ambar, Dr. Prasad M.R., Dr. Vishwanath Hesarur, Dr. Vaibhav Patil, Dr. Suhasini Atharga .
