The Karnataka State government has recently released comprehensive guidelines for the Griha Jyoti guarantee scheme. This scheme aims to provide affordable electricity to households across the state. As per the guidelines, consumers who consume less than 200 units per month will receive free electricity, while those who consume more than 200 units will have to pay the entire bill amount.

This scheme is designed to provide relief to households by reducing their electricity bills. It is important to note that this scheme is only applicable to household electricity connections and not for commercial purposes or if electricity is used for other purposes. To avail of this scheme, customers must apply through the Seva Sindhu portal and link their Customer ID/Account ID with their Aadhaar.

To ensure that the scheme is implemented effectively, the government has set a maximum consumption limit of 10% on the monthly average consumption of each consumer, based on the consumption of the financial year 2022-23. This limit applies to a maximum consumption of 200 units per month for each household in the state.

Furthermore, the government has approved the payment of the full electricity bill for consumers who consume more than 200 units. This move is expected to provide relief to households that consume more electricity and may struggle to pay their bills.

The Griha Jyoti guarantee scheme will be implemented from July 2023, with the new guidelines applicable to bills issued from August 2023.

Gruhajyothi guarantee scheme

1. This scheme is exclusively applicable to household electricity connections and is not applicable for commercial purposes or if electricity is used for other purposes.

2. Every month, the total electricity consumption will be calculated by taking the meter reading and entering the bill accordingly.

3. The eligible amount of the household electricity user will be deducted from the bill, and the net bill will be given to the customer, who will then pay the net bill.

4. If the bill is less than the eligible unit/amount, a zero bill will be given to the customer.

5. Customers who wish to avail of this scheme must apply through the Seva Sindhu portal.

6. It is mandatory to link each beneficiary’s Customer ID/Account ID with Aadhaar.

7. The Griha Jyoti Yojana will include the beneficiary customers of the existing Bhagya Jyoti/Kutira Jyoti Yojana and Amrita Jyoti Yojana.

8. The arrears of electricity charges due by the end of 30.06.2023 (including the amount bill issued in July 2023 for the amount of electricity used in the month of June 2023) must be paid within three months. Failure to pay within the prescribed period will result in disconnection.

9. The installation of a meter and meter reading is mandatory.

10. If there are multiple connections/meters/houses in the name of a household electricity user, only one such account will be eligible for the facility under this scheme.
