Maratha Mandal’s Nathajirao G. Halgekar Institute of Dental Sciences and Research Center, Belgaum has been permitted by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Bangalore and Government of Karnataka to start a new course in oral health sciences; Msc in Oral Biology. Oral Biology is a new discipline which is research oriented and focuses on combining basic science research and clinical research which can lead to developing new techniques for diagnosing, preventing and controlling oral diseases.
The MSc in Oral Biology program which was conceptualized by Dr. Vinayak Joshi will use the core competency of Molecular Biology Department at Maratha Mandals’s Nathajirao G. Halgekar Institute of Dental Sciences and Research Center. The institute has also been instrumental in designing the course curriculum in collaboration with RGUHS. The inception of this course was very well supported by Dr. Ramananda Shetty, Ex VC, RGUHS, Dr. D. Premkumar and Dr. G. V. Niranjan, RGUHS.
This program will be headed by Dr Kishore Bhat who has been one of the highly acclaimed oral microbiologists in the country. He will be supported by Dr Ramakant Nayak, the dean of this college, Dr Vinayak Joshi, Dr Asawari Sant, Mr Manohar, Mrs Preeti, Mrs Ulka, Ms Ronaldina and others.
Student with recognized degree of BDS or MDS/ MBBS, MSc in Medical Microbiology, Genetics or Biotechnology are eligible for this course. Master of Science in Oral Biology will train exceptional students to become research scientists in their field of specialization and interest. This training will prepare dental scientists who will be strong candidates for faculty positions in dental schools which aim to setup research labs and carry out their own in house research at major dental colleges around the country or act at various different roles in the Research and Development departments in the industrial sector. These candidates can also work as consultants and as clinical investigators in academics and industries.
