A legal petition has been filed against the Belagavi City Corporation for failing to pay Rs 20 crores for land acquisition related to a road construction project. The non-payment has placed the City Corporation in a difficult situation, as they are now required to pay the amount to the concerned landowners.
The issue stems from the construction of a new road connecting the Bank of India Circle to Old PB Road in Shahapur by the Belagavi Smart City ltd. After the road was completed, a court order mandated the land acquisition process, directing officials to compensate the owners of a 30 Guntha plot with Rs 20 crores. However, the City Corporation has not yet made this payment, prompting the landowners to approach the court once again.
The road was constructed by Belagavi Smart City Ltd., but proper land acquisition was not carried out before the construction. The road was built by directly occupying the land, leading to complications after its completion. Now, the municipal corporation faces the burden of paying Rs 20 crores, despite not being directly involved in the road’s construction.
The court has already ordered the implementation of the land acquisition process and payment of compensation. Failure to comply with this order could result in a contempt of court charge against the Belagavi City Corporation. The government has also been involved, as the City Corporation submitted a proposal for land acquisition, but the issue remains unresolved.
Now, the City Corporation must deposit the Rs 20 crores in court to comply with the order.
