18 Kms from Belagavi, literally meaning a hamlet of a Rakkasa (Giant), who is stated to have lived on a hillock near the village. A cavern in laterite on the hillock resembling a huge seated human figure is shown by the people to remind his past existence. Here is a Dam across the river Markandeya, supplying drinking water to Belagavi. The construction of the dam was started in 1960 and completed in 1962.

  1. Yes, as said by Maverick, the holding capacity of the Dam should be increased. This is very much required from increasing of population in the Belgaum city point of view.

  2. Unless the reservoir is de-silted, this will happen again and again. Though the monsoon has not yet started in full swing, for Belagavi’s standards, an overflowing reservoir at this time of monsoon is a cause for concern. We may face shortage in the next summer. De-silting(during next summer) and increasing the capacity would be a better option for the rapidly growing city population.

  3. Every year the reservoir overflows, hence the government must take action and increase the reservoir holding capacity

  4. Good News about the Dam filled up and now overflowing. Better late than Never. Since paucity of rains in Belagavi District up to last month was a cause of great concern to both the authorities and general public. However it is advised to use this water judiciously and conserve for any unforeseen circumstances for the future.
