Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Minister for Civil Aviation, has responded to Dr. Prabhakar Kore’s request for the restoration of flight services from Belagavi Airport by stating that airlines have the autonomy to offer more air services to certain destinations based on the traffic demand and commercial viability.

It is worth noting that Dr. Prabhakar Kore had previously written to the minister seeking his intervention in restoring flight services from Belagavi Airport.

The minister shared that currently, Indigo and Star Air operate 84 scheduled aircraft movements (arrivals and departures) per week to destinations such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Indore, Jodhpur, Nagpur, Surat, and Tirupati.

Belagavi Airport was identified as an underserved airport for the operation of flights under RCS-UDAN. M/s Alliance Air commenced UDAN flights between Belagavi & Pune, which were discontinued after completion of 3 year’s tenure. Thus, presently there is no operations exclusivity on the Belagavi-Pune-Belagavi route as per the provisions of UDAN scheme. M/s Ghodawat Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. commenced operations on Belagavi-Nasik Belagavi route, however, discontinued temporarily due to operational reasons. The airline has been instructed to re-commence the operations for ‘Belagavi-Nasik-Belagavi’.

UDAN flights between Belagavi and Mysore has been discontinued due to internal issues of the airline. The Belagavi to Delhi and Chennai route is beyond 600 Km stage length and therefore, does not fall under the purview of the UDAN scheme.

With regard to flight operation from Belagavi Airport, it may please by noted that for commercial flight operations, with the repeal of Air Corporations Act in March, 1994, the Indian domestic aviation was deregulated. It is, therefore, up to the airlines to provide air services to specific places depending upon the traffic demand and commercial viability subject to compliance with the extant guidelines in this regard. However, your request of flight operation from Belagavi Airport has been shared with all scheduled domestic airlines for favourable consideration.
