Nothing has ever changed human life as much as the advent of the internet. The whole world suddenly seems to have gotten smaller and there is a much desired platform to present ourselves and speak our mind out. Reaching out to people and organizations has never been as easy as it is today.
The Belagavi City Corporation Page got a rebirth with the coming of the Smart city plan where there was a need that each of the corporation had a social media presence. Hence September 21, 2015 the page took a rebirth but died off early as no updates were posted after October 9, 2015. And the main aim for which Social media is used to connect to the people was never utilized. Messages from the users were deleted without any reply. The page is now silent as if everything in the city is well and no is complaining. The medium had been previously successful in addressing minor issues pertaining to a few road repairs, leaking water lines and drainage, to name a few but all of a sudden the silence restored the status of deaf years as has often been the complaint of citizens in town.
Was it a gimmick that had done its deed and needed no more attention or was it just a change in the party at the helm of affairs, is a mystery for us to ponder over and maybe eventually learn to accept.
While most commoners are addicts when it comes to Facebook, one can only guess that Facebook failed to instill similar habits to facilitate discussions and exchanges that would have mattered the most.
Indian politics and democracy has always been hailed as a story of “Far from the people”, “off the people” and “buy the people”. Is this just another case of returning to good old times as we have learnt to call them?
Reaching out to public and political representatives, as is, is a difficult task that most choose not to undertake on account of the time expense. The internet did provide a formal and methodical means of listening to the worries of and in certain cases even the appreciation from the citizens of Belgaum.
Have we just earned ourselves another spell of silence? I guess only time will tell. Till then it’s just you and we here at All About Belgaum and our endeavor to provide a much needed vent to the voices in town that have a lot to say about what needs to be done to make life much better in our own sweet spot in one little corner of the blue planet.
