On October 11, 2012 Belgaum would get its mega structure the Suvarna Vidhan Soudha built on the lines of the Vidhan Soudha in Bangalore. The President Shri.Pranab Mukherjee will be here to inaugurate the same along with other ministers from the center.
B G Shirke group has built this structure. The firm deployed 1,400 laborers and 36 engineers for the Soudha work. White stones required for the building work were brought from Hesaraghatta in Bangalore, Ornamental stone has been used in the construction of the Soudha, with skilled workers brought in from Tamil Nadu. The mammoth pillars, upto 20 metres in height, required specialized centring works.
The Suvarna Soudha is a three-floored structure spread over 16,138 sq.m and consists of an Assembly hall that seats 300, a Council hall for 100 members, a 450-seat auditorium, 38 ministerial chambers and 14 meeting halls.
This structure, is a 3 floored building including basement and ground floor. Building measures 150.15 feet 107.25 meter, total area 60298 square meter. Height is 22 meter. This building has an assembly hall, with seating arrangement for 300 people. Central hall 450, Council hall 100, banquet hall 500, conference hall 350 – people seating facility.
Some figures of materials used for the SVS: Excavation : 220000 Cum, Steel: 400.31 Mt, Internal Plastering: 178000 Sqm, Brick Masonry: 8400 Cum, Ceiling Design Plaster: 2590 Sqm, Granite Flooring: 58500 Sqm, Teakwood Doors & Windows: 6900 Sqm and 6 cranes were used.
Rs. 17 crore would be spent for the event. There are Two scheduled programmes on the Soudha premises, in which the President will take part, the Assembly Secretariat has released Rs.2 crore to the district administration which is making the required arrangements. The President will spend nearly two hours from 12.30 pm at the Soudha.
Public Works Department has released Rs.8 crore for repair of main roads, footpaths and related works to beautify the City. The Belgaum City Corporation has released Rs.5 crore for the event. The deputy commissioner’s office has released Rs.3 crore.
As per protocol, the local MLA, irrespective of his political party, presides over government events in that area and as this falls in Halga Bastwad village, 12kms from Belgaum city, the Belgaum Rural MLA Sanjay Patil should preside over the event. However Yeddyurappa wanted to preside over and to avoid the breach of protocol, he has been chief guest. And at the same other former CM’s have also been invited to save some skin in this regard.
The first special session of legislature outside Bangalore was held in Belgaum in September 2006 and this December we could see the next one at the SVS.
The President would also confer Jnanapeet Award to renowned Kannada literary personality Chandrasehkar Kambar at Gandhi Bhavan at 5.30pm and attend the Bhoomi Pujan of the Swami Vivekananda Value Education and Cultural Centre here before that. The president would be leaving for Delhi from here directly after the event.
