The Department of Gastroenterology and Liver Disease has performed 3 back to back deceased donor liver transplants at KLEs DR. Prabhakar Kore Hospital Belagavi within a short span of 12 days.
This was possible as three noble families agreed to organ donation for their loved ones after brain death, Mr. Durgesh Uppar 25 a male from KIMS Hospital Hubli, Mrs. Sakshi Bandivedkar 42 year female from Jaishinghpur, and a 25-year-old male from Belagavi both admitted at KLEs Dr. P.K Hospital at Belgavi.
These livers were given to 3 patients one from Bellad Bagewadi, one from Chikmanglur, and one from Karoshi Belagavi district, all of whom were registered for liver transplant surgery at KLE Hospital. All three patients are doing well post-transplant and were planned to be discharged in a few days informed Dr. Santosh Hajare, Chief of the Department of Gastroenterology at KLE Dr P.K Hospital.Â
These liver transplant surgeries were done by a team led by Dr. Sonal Asthana from Aster Hospital Bengaluru and Dr. Sudharshan Chougale, Liver transplant surgeon at KLE Hospital. They were ably supported by Anesthetists Dr. Rajesh Mane and Dr. Manjunath Patil, administrator Dr. Basavaraj Bijjargi, transplant coordinators Mrs. Geeta Desai and Mr. Basavaraj Majati, and specialized nursing staff.
With 9 successful liver transplants done in a short span of 10 months, KLEs P.K Hospital is fast developing into a very reliable liver transplant center in this part of the country. It is the only liver transplant center in entire North Karnataka and Goa.
