In the Lok Sabha, Jagadish Shettar MP Belagavi inquired about the extent of defence land in Belagavi city and district, along with details of any state government land leased for defence use.
Responding to the query, Minister of State for Defence, Shri Sanjay Seth, provided the following details:
- Total Defence Land in Belagavi District:3430.3832 acres
- Inside Belagavi City:
- Within Cantonment: 1604.6912 acres
- Outside Cantonment: 1470.905 acres
- Outside Belagavi City: 354.787 acres
- Inside Belagavi City:

Regarding state government land under defence possession, the minister clarified that no state land in the Belagavi district is currently leased for defence use. However, he mentioned the Ramdurg Field Firing Range (FFR), which was leased for 10 years (2002-2012).
The Karnataka government had sanctioned 50 hectares of forest land for defence use, with a lease payment of ₹7,50,000 already made to the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Belagavi Division, on August 28, 2023.
Is he not interested in defence forces to be in Belgaum? Or what is his interest?
As population is growing defence land acquisition be reverted to government.
Due to Army not issuing NOC, The BUDA has kept land of owners in unclassified zone.
The joke is defence land is earmarked in CDP plan as yellow zone for residencial purpose.
Yet it’s been decade no approvals are given for layout near defence lands and owners are frustrated . Atleast buy the land at market price and hand over to defence. Disgusting Rules ……
If the honorable minister would enquire how many plots BUDA had allotted in last 25 years to citizens of Belgaum it’ll be crystal clear why all our elected representatives are interested in defence land
