Veteran theatre artist Enagi Balappa no more

Legendary theatre actor, singer, and owner of professional repertories Enagi Balappa passed away on Friday morning at the age of 103 at his native residence in Savadatti of Belagavi district.

Born Balappa Karibasappa Lokur in 1914, he came to be known as Enagi Balappa, as drama enthusiasts connected the actor with his native village.

Balappa donned feminine roles too and acted in many Kannada movies. Through actor Shivarajkumar-starrer Janumada Jodi, Balappa shot into fame in Sandalwood.

He played Basaveshwara in a farewell performance at Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bengaluru soon after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Enagi Balappa is the recipient of Karnataka State Nataka Academy Award, Karnataka Sahitya Parishat award, Karnataka State Government’s prestigious Gubbi Veeranna Award, Kannada University’s Nadoja Award, Karnataka University’s honorary doctorate, Nata Bhushan, Natagandharva and many more.
