Visvesvaraya Technological University to spend lakhs on foundation day celebrations

The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) will celebrate its 20th foundation day on June 29 and an extravagant program has been arranged where Governor Vajubhai R. Vala, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Higher Education Minister G.T. Deve Gowda. Padma Vibhushan awardee and scientist V.K. Aatre will deliver the foundation day lecture.

The New Indian Express reports that About Rs 1 crore has been approved by the Finance Committee for the Foundation Day celebrations, which according to a section of varsity authorities is a sheer waste of students’ money. The varsity did not even receive approval for the event from its Executive Council.

While the Hindu, reports, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) authorities found themselves in a controversy after several varsity members criticised it for spending an “extravagant” amount of around ₹50 lakh for the 20th Foundation Day to be held on Friday at Belagavi.

VTU which faces severe financial crunch has often been accused of spending money unwisely. Recently, the varsity had paid around Rs 11 crore just for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the skill center at Talkal village in Yelburga.

Visvesvaraya Technological University has accounts in every Belagavi bank

A state university can have a maximum of three bank accounts. However, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has accounts in almost all the bank branches in Belagavi. This came to light after an internal audit was conducted by the university authorities for the last eight years. According to official sources, the audit is still ongoing.
