In a tragic incident, a 52-year-old woman from Shirur village, Hukkeri taluk, died by suicide in Kakati on Wednesday (Jan 22), reportedly distressed over her entanglement in a large-scale loan scam. This marks the first reported suicide in the district linked to such fraudulent activities.

The deceased, identified as Saroja Kirbi, had secured a loan through a finance scheme that promised subsidies. Trusting the assurances of Holeppa Daddi from Yamanapur village, she lent him a significant portion of the loan, along with her personal documents. Holeppa had pledged to repay the full amount, including interest, within two years. Initially, he made a few repayments but soon defaulted, leaving Saroja burdened with the debt.

Saroja’s son revealed that the financial and emotional strain caused by this betrayal drove her to take the extreme step.

The Kakati police have registered a case and are actively investigating the matter. Further inquiries have revealed that Holeppa Daddi allegedly defrauded over 7,000 women in Belagavi taluk and neighboring villages, convincing them to take loans under false promises. Preliminary estimates suggest a scam amounting to ₹19 crore. Authorities confirmed that a formal complaint regarding this massive fraud had already been filed.
