Starting September 27, 2012 Hubli will be connected to Bangalore with the Spicejet commencing its operations from there with its daily flight from Bangalore at 1950 and from Hubli at 2105.Â
After seeing the new landing page for Hubli, is Belgaum next in the queue.
It may be worthy to note that Spicejet had already got a DGCA approval for its Belgaum route way back in its winter schedule of 2011-12. But nothing really materialized on the ground.
Recently in the last week of August, a team from Spicejet had visited Hubli and Belgaum to see all the facilities available. So its Hubli operations are commencing from September 27.
When can we expect the same for Belgaum?
IXG the code by which Sambra, Belgaum is known to the world in the aviation industry now has been non operational for commercial use from November 20, 2011. One of the oldest airports in the country which was commissioned by The Royal Air Force in 1942 and then the Patwardhan Sarkar had allotted the land. Indian Airlines had regular service from here but in late 1980′s it got dis continued and in 1989 private players like Vayudoot started operations with the Belgaum – Mumbai and Belgaum- Bangalore services.
1993-95 East west airlines flew from here and in 1994 NEPC also started operations. In 1997-98 Span Airways had its operations from here. In 1998 Gujrat airways commenced its operations on Bangalore Belgaum Pune route. In 1999 air services from Sambra stopped completely. 1999 till 2003 the airport was being utlised by politicians and the Air force for training with no commercial flights. The Belgaum airport was recently renovated at a cost of Rs.3.57crores which now boasts of a fully AC terminal building. Mr. Praful Patel had said that by January 2010 air services would resume from Belgaum.
In 2003 Air Deccan the low cost airline started its operations and Belgaum was back on the radar. Service was commenced on 29 September 2003 with the Mumbai – Bangalore service via Belgaum. Later due to lack of traffic only Belgaum – Bangalore service was in operation.
The QUEST sez which specializes in aerospace is just 45 kms from the city which makes parts for the Boiengs and Airbus and also companies like Servocontrols are into aero space but as there are no flights these companies face a lot of difficulties getting their clients here.
A similar case is with the foundry industry which serves the Auto industry but due to non availability of flights they say their growth is hampered. The Belgaum Chamber of Commerce had tried to commence air operations from here, but again Belgaum has to face the same fate.
When can we expect the same for Belgaum?Â
We’ll always remain in queue.. may be even smaller cities will surpass and take ahead of Belgaum in no mean time, may be, 10 years from now, we’ll be known as a tiny town somewhere in NK.. Untill we take up this as priority, we’ll not make it to top cities, other cities fight for it, compete and they get it, they deserve it, we are bound by Politicians.. the farmers get 20 lakhs + per acre as compensation but refuse to give up land fo development just cause politicians say or they don’t want development. MES has already made us aged old civilization, thanks to them.. No govt or business likes when its irked, specially not the govt in which juridiction it falls in. In other cities people write to the govt of what they want and deserve, only me writing or 2 or 3 writing doesn’t help, we need the people, media, and more over all together to address this. don’t blame anyone or anybody, lets blame ourselves for this debacle!!!!
Spicejet starting operations from 21st September as per the news papers i read. Lets hope the same fron Belgaum at the earliest. Here worry is they should not make us to go Hubli to fly and nearest airport Belgaum is Hubli.
Belgaum is lagging in rail as well. No one is ready to fight for new railway track of Belgaum-Kittur-Dharwad. Also NWKRTC main division is in Hubli. So always they get more buses. So after knowing all these facts we need to know which is second capital.
Belgaum is lagging in rail as well(Hubli is getting modern railway station with new platforms plus one more new bus stand). We need to fight for new track Belgaum-Kittur-Dharwad. Also NWKRTC main division is in Hubli. So always they get more and new buses. Now air connectivity also. Pity on Belgaum.
THE ONLY OPTION LEFT FOR THE KARNATAKA GOVERNMENT IS TO BUILD A CITY CALLED NEW BELGAUM PURPORTED TO BE IN KARNATAKA ON THE LINES OF NAVI MUMBAI ,NEW DELHI,PANCHKULA. THE CITY OF NEW BELGAUM WILL DEVELOP AT A RAPID PACE. THIS MAY BE THE ONLY SOLUTION.
LOL 🙂 nothing will happen.. I have seen in years 🙂 we are a feeder for GOA with supplies and even to mother dairy in pune with milk…thats all! no development no nothing.. why? all MES oppose everything, all politicians, they get what they want and leave us 🙂 simple economics, wish we never had this MES 🙂 get out of belgaum, make a career and flourish in pune or bangalore, Belgaum is gonna always be this, stuck for no reason or no leave foreverl! Its better to concentrate on other cities than BELGAUM.. it will remain as it is.. FOREVER! with development, look at Gujarat, farmers protested at rainy places 🙂 and Govt got water to dry places and now rainy places are raining with cries 🙂 If we really wanna grow.. be with the GOVT! for govt works is god’s work.
Welcome back Robbie on AAB.
As far as MES is concerned!!! Come-on grow-up Robbie, try to find different (genuine)reason for Administrative failure. Come out of the well and face the real world.

Are these not a indication of development? Name at least one city which is fully developed and has no problems at all. Every city; Big or Small; Developed or under developed; has got their own problem. Don’t under estimate the city in which you live.
Instead of criticizing for we lack, try being proud of what we have and what we are. We have few cities which more developed than us but there are hundreds of city/towns which far less developed than us.
Development will happen!!! It will take time. Only Govt is not responsible for Development, even we as a citizen need to contribute and motivate.
By the way dear Mr. Robbie……. Get well Soon!!!!!!!!!
Proud Belgaumite.
Thanks.. me will get well soon!!! how bout you guys? 🙂
Aww.. so much… WOW .. I din’t really know all this, thanks for enlightening me so much 🙂
@ VIDYADHARAN ,ALL THE FACTS WERE WELL BROUGHT OUT. THE STATISTICS GIVEN BY YOU ARE FOR BELGAUM DISTRICT AS A WHOLE. IT IS ALSO TRUE THAT BELGAUM DISTRICT IS AT No:2 IN GETTING THE REVENUE.BUT YOUR INSISTING TO OVERLOOK THE UNDER DEVELOPMENT OF BELGAUM DUE TO MES FACTOR TERMING IT AS A MICRO ISSUE IS ERRONEOUS. THE BORDER DISPUTE HAS LEFT THE GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA AS ” WHOSE BABY IT IS ?”. DUE TO THIS THE GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA IS PROVIDING THE MONEY FOR BARE MINIMUM MAINTENANCE OF INFRA STRUCTURE. THE OTHER THINGS LIKE BUILDING OF SUVARNA SOUDHA ,PROVIDING FUNDS FOR BELGAUM ,MAKING BELGAUM AS THE SECOND CAPTIAL OF KARNATAKA CAN BE VIEWED AS SOME FORM OF EFFORTS TO RETAIN IT IN KARNATAKA. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE MAIN NEGATIVE ELEMENT IN DEVELOPMENT OF BELGAUM IS M.E.S. THEY ARE MESSY PEOPLE. ALSO IT IS VERY INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT PEOPLE OF BELGAUM LOVE BELGAUM MORE THAN WHAT OTHER PEOPLE LOVE THEIR CITY.
+100 SHIVANAND
Only by building a survana soudha 10 kms away from city is not development of Belgaum, the roads are in bad shape, infact the worst, the lamps on congress road aren’t working.. the newly installed on footpath.. only 20 of 200 work.. we Belgaum are getting this patchy treatment from the govt in all aspects. and no one cares 🙂
When will our politicians wake up to the cries our city? When will our airport start functioning? Is Jagadhish Shettar interested only in the development of Hubli? What are our local politicians doing? The roads in Vinayak nagar have not been repaired for past 7 years.Filling your pockets is not enough.Spend atleast 65 % of the funds provided.LOVE YOU BELGAUM
What are our local politicians doing? Other cities are developing rapidly. One day they might make our airport a museum.Wake up Suresh Angadi.Spend at least 70 % of the funds provided to you.LOVE YOU BELGAUM
