Efforts are underway to bring an IT company to Belagavi that could potentially create employment for around 2,000 local youth, with discussions with the company reportedly having reached the final stage, Belagavi South MLA Abhay Patil has said.
Patil made the remarks while speaking at a programme in the city. According to a report published by eBelagavi, the proposed IT opportunity is being pursued with the aim of creating more employment opportunities locally and reducing the migration of talented youth to Bengaluru, Pune and other cities in search of jobs.
“Providing good opportunities in the city itself is our objective,” Patil was quoted as saying. He added that discussions with a company capable of employing around 2,000 people had reached the final stage and expressed hope that the effort would help retain local talent.
Airport connectivity also on the agenda
The report also highlights the importance of air connectivity for attracting industries and IT companies to Belagavi.
Patil has reportedly sought intervention from the Centre for restoration of discontinued flight services and said that regular connectivity with major cities is essential from an industrial and business-travel perspective.
Belagavi had direct air services to Udaipur, Jaipur and Chennai in the past, according to the report, and the MLA has called for efforts to restore important routes.
₹60 crore ropeway proposal for Rajhunsgad Fort
Tourism infrastructure also figured in the programme.
A proposal has reportedly been prepared to construct a ropeway to the historic Rajhunsgad Yellur Fort, at an estimated cost of around ₹60 crore. Patil said he had discussed the proposal with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The proposal is aimed at improving access to the fort and strengthening Belagavi’s tourism infrastructure.
Patil also pointed to Belagavi’s religious, natural and historical tourism potential, while stating that several important projects in the Vaccine Depot area are nearing completion. Their inauguration is expected to take place in November, after which the projects are expected to attract thousands of visitors to the city every day, according to the report.
Water project cost rises from ₹240 crore to ₹588 crore
The city’s long-pending 24×7 water supply scheme, originally expected to cost around ₹240 crore when work began in 2023, was also discussed.
Patil expressed displeasure over the delay in implementation and said that the project, which was expected to be completed earlier, has now seen its cost rise to around ₹588 crore, according to the report.
He said repeated efforts had been made to secure approvals for the project and acknowledged the cooperation of the late Union Minister Anantkumar in this regard.
The report also raises concerns over coordination between road works and water pipeline works. Newly constructed roads are reportedly being dug up again for the L&T pipeline-related work, causing inconvenience to residents.
IT investment needs more than a company announcement
The proposed IT company, if the discussions result in a formal commitment, could be an important development for Belagavi’s employment landscape. However, the current information indicates that the project remains at the discussion stage, rather than being a formally announced investment.
For Belagavi to retain IT talent, the availability of reliable air connectivity, urban infrastructure, quality commercial space and a supporting technology ecosystem will also be important alongside the arrival of individual companies.
The IT company involved in the discussions has not been identified in the report, nor have details such as the proposed investment, location, project timeline or nature of the 2,000 jobs been disclosed.
