Responding to allegations about 5 TMC of water being diverted from Hidkal Dam in Belagavi to the Dharwad industrial area, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar dismissed the claims. Speaking near Feroz Seth’s residence, he said, “5 TMC of water cannot be given to Bengaluru itself. How can it be taken here? We cannot respond to such allegations without proper verification. I have recently added 6 TMC of water to Bengaluru. People need to understand how much 1 TMC of water actually is.”

Shivakumar revealed that he had met Hukkeri MLA Nikhil Katti, who had raised concerns regarding the issue. “I reviewed the matter yesterday and requested a detailed report. Appropriate action will be taken once the report is received,” he assured.

Emphasizing the need for official approval for water usage, he said, “Permission is mandatory for releasing water for any purpose. I have already increased the rates for water supplied to industries. The central government has issued new guidelines and policies on water usage, which we plan to propose in the next legislative session. Whether for agriculture, industries, or urban drinking water, water usage is calculated meticulously.”

When asked if the district in-charge minister was informed about the matter, Shivakumar remarked, “Not all ministers are aware of everything. Each department makes decisions based on its domain. This issue will be addressed in due course, and all details will be disclosed after proper verification.”

The Deputy CM’s statement highlights the government’s intent to regulate water usage carefully while addressing public and industrial demands.

  1. Hidkal Dam water need to be used for Belgaum District only , if required shift the industries to Udyambaug, Honaga and other belgaum industrial areas.Since this water is a drinking water also for belgaum . Also belgaum is expanding in population and agriculture is one of the major occupation. So dont calculate the water consumption for today do it for next 50 years at least .
