IDS Belagavi marathon on Sunday- 49 year old shepherd to run 21 kms along with physically challenged son

As the city is all set to host IDS Belagavi marathon, a first half marathon to be held in the region, about 1500 athletes and amateurs will take part in the event that will be held on October 21, Sunday at 6 AM. 

The marathon will be flagged off at C Ped ground here at 6 am. Major General Alok Kacker of Junior Leaders Wing and Commissioner of Police DC Rajappa will flag off the events.

Giving details about the marathon Dr. Shashikant Kulgod, organising chairman of the event said that runners coming from Mumbai, Pune, Satara, Goa and whole of Belagavi district will take part in 5 kms, 10 kms and 21 kms. While 825 runners will take part in 5 kms marathon, 400 runners and 275 runners will take part in 10 and 21 kms marathon respectively,” Dr. Kulgod said.

While people from all walks of life will be taking part in the IDS Belagavi marathon on Sunday, a 49 year old shepherd Sanju Sambrekar will be taking part in the 21 km marathon. According to organisers his differently abled son too will be running a distance of 5 kms. A large number of senior citizens too are taking part in the marathon.

sambrekarCo hosted by City Corporation of Belagavi, City Commissioner Shashidhar Kurer, Brig Govind Kalwad and a large contingent from Maratha Light Infantry Centre (MLIRC) and commandos from Junior Leaders Wing and renowned athletes like Sheetal Kolhapure and others will be taking part.

Moreover, people from all walks of life like doctors, engineers, charter accountants, teachers, farmers, and even a shepherd and 100 children from government schools too are participating in the event.

Meanwhile, as the marathon is passing through main city approach roads, traffic will have some diversions at Hindalga Ganesh temple corner, Gandhi chowk, Shourya chowk and Ganeshpur roads.
