Heavy rains lash city

For the past 48 hours Belgaum city and district is receiving heavy showers. Yesterday city received 6 cm of rainfall in 24 hours.

The NH 4 under pass at Gandhinagar was filled with water and commuters faced a hard time.

The low-lying areas were flooded and people remained busy removing water from their houses like Gandhinagar. A bridgr on the Belgaum-Gojaga road was washed away.

The water level in Krishna, Ghataprabha, Malaprabha, Doodhganga, Vedganga and Markandeya rivers flowing into the district is on the rise.

Farmers are having a happy time as their sowing is over and they were just waiting for rain. The rain has given drift to their activities.

Met department forecasts heavy to very heavy rains in the coming days.

Pray to the rain Gods

For the past week or so Belgaumites are in the national media and all OB vans and reporters from unknown channels are also interviewing people in Belgaum.

But with all that hype around we will all need to Pray to Rain God, and if the rain god is not happy on us be sure you will face a lot of water woes in the year ahead.

See these figures which are Belgaum Taluka which are very disturbing.

In June Last Belgaum Taluka received 225 mm of rainfall while in 2010 we received 175.20 a shortfall of 50 mm.

In July 2009 Belgaum Taluka received 473 mm of rainfall and the worst till 15 July we have only received 2.1 mm of Rainfall.

This is a cause of concern. The Rakaskop reservoir which normally is full this time around still needs about 15 feet of water to get filled.

The District Rainfall(mm.) June July August September2005 217.4 334.2 190.3 225.22006 189.1 282.2 210.7 130.92007 275.9 220.2 189.6 165.72008 127 79.1 187.2 178.62009 113.7 391.3 185.1 220.9(1941-90) averages of rainfall 98.3 126.4 153 113.2

The above figures in the table are for Belgaum District and hence do not tally with the figures of Belgaum Taluka mentioned in the story above.

The farmers are also facing a huge problem infornt of them as they will be forced to resow as the current sow has not yet grown sufficiently.

Forecast: Scattered rainfall would occur over north Interior Karnataka with over cast sky.

Monsoon takes a break

Not much relief from this picture

The much awaited monsoons as said by the met department did come a day or to late but after the first blood, monsoons have a taken a good break for about three days where there has been very less rains in the city.

The current forecast for the next 2-3 days is also not so heartening, where met department forecasts of isolated rain in interior Karnataka.

Normally Belgaum receives about 99 mm of rains in month of June but we have not come near that figure this year.

Temprature also has risen due to this and today it was 26 deg. Celcius.

Less rainfall will be a cause of worry for the farmers as if the rain does not come in the next few days, they might have to re sow.

The monsoons hasnt reached the northern part of India and they are facing the heat with tempratures reaching 48 deg in Rajasthan.

Pray to the lord Monsoons comes back..

“Ye re Ye re Pausa, Tula Deto Paisa ……..”

IMD weather report two temp recordings on same time which is correct

The India Meteorological department on its website has daily temperature recordings on its site of major cities of India. AAB keeps following it daily for variations and today there were two pages of the same site which showed two different temperatures.

The variation isn’t much but still the timing of recording is the same but temperature is different. AAB followed this variation for over two days and same continued. Why is this I cannot say.

One page says 38 and another says 36.6.

Both sites are the same. Earlier it was imd.gov.in and now on the same site a new site has been designed as mausam.gov.in. All these temperatures are recorded at Sambra.

Till then you all can enjoy the heat and the say its too hot than the temperature recorded.

Thanda Thanda cool cool

With the onset of December (almost) the weather in the city is getting cooler day by day. Today morning (30-11-2009) temperature recorded at Sambra was 12.4 deg C with clear sky.

The cold wave is ready to grip the entire north Karnataka. Yesterday temperature recorded was 11.6 degrees Celsius. Cool northerly winds, clear skies and a dry atmosphere are responsible for the cold wave. These minimum temperatures are between five to six degrees Celsius less than normal for this time of the year.

The sales of Fans have increased said a local dealer. He said normally the demand is there from mid march or later but these enquiries started in late February only and we are doing good business in this first week. The same is the case with AC’s. The sale of ice cream is rising day by day and as soon as the exams get over all the ice cream dealers will be doing brisk business.

Incase of ice cream this time in the city you can also taste Baskin Robbins at the Nucleus mall, elsewhere Aditya  ice cream is the latest new comer with easy availability almost all over, there are those old brands like Dinshaws and Amul also.

The sale of eye glasses on the road side has also seen a rise. Juice centers, coconut vendors are doing brisk business as the temperature is rising day by day and there is no great relief.

See the gradual increase in the temperatures.

Just compare the monthly averages in Jan and Feb. this year and we could be heading for a very hot summer ahead. In May we could even break some records.

It is believed that after Holi if the rains come, they keep on coming in between till the monsoons. Let’s see Holi is a couple of days ahead and hope for the best.

See the forecast for the coming week, no sight of relief.
